Garage apartments have become one of our favorite small-space designs because they offer the comfort of a traditional home without requiring a large footprint. The Cypress Tree House at 8-acre Happiness Ranch in Blanco, Texas, is one of the best examples we've stayed in.
Although technically a garage apartment rather than a tiny house, this 700-square-foot studio home sits above a two-car garage and feels like you're living in the treetops. Surrounded by mature cypress trees overlooking the seasonal Little Blanco River, the elevated design creates a peaceful retreat while still being close to some of the best attractions in the Texas Hill Country.
What impressed us most wasn't just the location—it was how bright and livable the interior feels. Thanks to 40 windows wrapping around the home, nearly every corner is flooded with natural light, making the space feel significantly larger than its footprint.

Walking into the Cypress Tree House, it's immediately clear why this home feels so much larger than its square footage suggests.
The open-concept living room is surrounded by windows on nearly every side, allowing natural light to pour into the space throughout the day. Instead of feeling like an apartment tucked above a garage, it almost feels like you're sitting in a modern treehouse, with views extending into the surrounding cypress trees.
The living area easily accommodates multiple sofas, creating a comfortable place to relax, watch a movie, or simply enjoy the scenery. High ceilings add to the sense of openness, while warm wood cabinetry, leather furnishings, and custom finishes give the space an upscale yet inviting feel.
🍳 Kitchen
The kitchen is easily one of our favorite features of the entire home.
Unlike many small-space kitchens that prioritize compactness, this one feels genuinely designed for someone who enjoys cooking. It features full-size built-in appliances, generous countertops, and more cabinetry than we've seen in many traditional homes.
A large farmhouse-style sink sits beneath a wall of windows, making meal prep a little more enjoyable thanks to the surrounding views. Marble countertops, beautiful wood cabinetry, and thoughtfully selected finishes elevate the entire space, while a dining table provides room for two to comfortably enjoy meals together.
Whether you're making a quick breakfast before exploring the Hill Country or cooking dinner after a day of wine tasting, the kitchen never feels limiting.
🛏️ Sleeping Area
Rather than enclosing the bedroom behind four walls, the Cypress Tree House uses a partial privacy wall to create separation while maintaining the openness of the studio layout.
The sleeping area features a comfortable king-size bed dressed in luxurious linens, creating a peaceful retreat without making the apartment feel closed off. Custom artwork and carefully selected furnishings help define the space, while windows continue to fill the room with natural light.
It's a clever solution that gives the bedroom its own identity while preserving the bright, airy feel of the overall floor plan.
🚿 Bathroom
The bathroom is surprisingly spacious and feels much more like something you'd find in a full-size custom home.
A double vanity offers plenty of countertop space, while colorful tile, carved marble sinks, and custom shelving give the room plenty of character. The tub and shower combination is beautifully tiled, making the space feel polished without being over-designed.
One detail we especially appreciated was how much storage the bathroom provides—something that's often overlooked in smaller homes.
👕 Storage & Laundry
Storage is another area where this garage apartment really shines.
Just beyond the bathroom is a large walk-in closet with storage on both sides, offering more than enough room for clothing, luggage, and everyday essentials. It's a feature you don't often see in homes this size and one that would make longer stays—or even full-time living—much more comfortable.
The apartment also includes a stackable washer and dryer, adding another layer of convenience for extended visits.
🌿 Outdoor Living
As beautiful as the interior is, the private outdoor space may be our favorite part of the property.
A generous balcony overlooks the surrounding cypress trees and Texas Hill Country, providing plenty of room to cook, dine, or simply relax outdoors. Comfortable seating and a propane grill make it easy to spend entire evenings outside enjoying the peaceful setting.
Guests are also welcome to explore the eight-acre Happiness Ranch, where walking trails, mature trees, and the seasonal Little Blanco River create a relaxing natural environment. It's easy to understand why the owners chose the name "Happiness Ranch"—the property genuinely encourages you to slow down and enjoy your surroundings.

The Cypress Tree House proves that garage apartments can be every bit as beautiful and functional as a traditional home. Between the 40 windows, designer kitchen, spacious living room, walk-in closet, and generous outdoor deck, this 700-sqft home strikes an excellent balance between comfort and thoughtful design.
What we loved most was how connected the home feels to its surroundings. The abundance of windows, elevated position, and peaceful Hill Country setting make the entire apartment feel bright, open, and immersed in nature.
